Cars Dress

For Scarlett, I made a Cars dress to go along with her brothers Cars shorts. I had seen this tutorial and thought the little dresses looked so sweet. I did run into some trouble with this tutorial though and thought I would share so if you decide to make it then hopefully you wont run into the same problem. I'm not a seasoned seamstress and have only very recently started making clothes so the tutorial was a bit harder for me to follow then some which wasn't a big deal but I found it helpful to read through it a few times before I started cutting anything. The main thing I had to change was the size. I cut everything for the 3T dress and found that once I finished it, it was incredibly wide on Scarlett. I ended up bringing it in a few inches on each side which still left it loose and comfortable for her but had a little structure to it. I love the way it looks now that it is done and will make this dress again but with a few tweaks. 

 I used the same Cars print I used for Taylor's shorts and made the top plain black with black ribbon ties.

 Every time it's clean she asks to wear it, my little Cars lover.

And I just love seeing my kids in matching outfits!

Cars Racing Shorts

For our second day at Disneyland I made Taylor a pair of Cars shorts. I love everything about these shorts!! I followed another one of Dana's tutorials at Made for the Retro Racer Shorts and as always it was super easy to follow. She makes me feel like I am so much more talented then I am with a sewing machine because her tutorials are so well written and photographed.

 I used a super comfy Cars material that I picked up at Joann's for $6 (this made Taylor's shorts and Scarlett's dress) and used red bias tape (that I picked up at a thrift store for $.19) because I wanted it to really stand out. Three bucks for a super awesome pair of shorts is what I'm talking about! I want to make Taylor a pair of these shorts for every day of the year because I LOVE the way they look on him. I love that they are sporty, comfy and are a slim fit. It seems like most athletic type shorts are GIANT on my little guy so I love things with a slimmer fit.

These are the first piece of clothing that I have put on him that he didn't want me to take off, that makes momma feel good.

 They were great for an action packed day of running around and playing.

Garden Volunteers

Now that the weather has heated up our backyard is like a greenhouse. I have been watering like crazy and the plants are thriving this year. Last year most of our veggies were demolished by fungi and insects but we seem to be doing OK this year.

 We have pumpkins sprouting up, along with a wild amount of brussel sprouts, tomatoes and carrots.

Scarlett is a wonderful helper in the garden and I take her with me whenever I go pick out new seeds to plant. She planted these zinnias and sunflowers from seed and was ecstatic to go out one morning and find that the sunflowers had opened. It is giving her such a sense of pride knowing she took part in it. 

 Behind her you can see our herb bed with chives, 2 types of basil, oregano, stevia, tarragon, mint and strawberries growing in the middle. Some of the plants are getting so big it's about time to start freezing them for the rest of the year. If you live close by and want any fresh herbs let me know, I would be happy to share!

 Scarlett loves going out back every evening and searching for red strawberries.

 Our flame grapes are starting to turn from green to purple and I can't wait to try one!

 So here is our garden mystery-We dumped our compost pile along the back wall in the winter and some volunteer plants have come up. They get water from the run off coming from our orange trees and are some of the happiest plants in the garden. I am new to this whole veggie garden thing and have no idea what it is we are growing but have just let it do it's thing. Does anyone out there recognize what this is? Above is a picture of it's leaves and below is a picture of it's flower. It's kind of fun that it is mysterious but I'm starting to get curious.

Mickey Shirts on a Dime

For our Disneyland trip I wanted to make the kids some special little outfits. I made two for each of them and since I knew I wouldn't have a ton of free time to put them together I kept the first one simple. I picked up a quarter yard of some really cute Mickey material for $3, cut around a couple of the Mickeys and appliqued them on some shirts that the kids already had in their closets.

I did Taylor's in a circle to cover up an existing picture on his shirt and it worked out perfect!

 On Scarlett's I added a Mickey to the front and a little mouse head to the back. She was so excited to wear it!

 I still have enough material left over that I would eventually like to make a matching skirt but that will have to come another day. For $3 I was able to give both my kids special Disney shirts without having to shell out the $15 each they were asking for at the park, yeah!!
