Footprint Art

I don't think there are many things cuter then the feet of a baby. In an effort to preserve the memory of my littlest ones feet we made a print of them on canvas this weekend. This is a project that is best done with an assistant but totally worth the doing.

All you need is a non-toxic acrylic paint, a canvas and little feet.

To get started have your assistant ready with a wet paper towel ready to clean those wiggly little feet. Next paint the bottom of one foot, then quickly stamp it on your canvas. Once you have the 1st foot stamped, clean that foot off and then repeat with the other foot. When we were all finished stamping my little guys feet we took him over to the sink and washed them with soap and water just to make sure they were good and clean.

The paint takes about an hour or so to fully dry and then you have a memory that will last a lifetime. You can leave it as is or embellish it any way you find fitting. I added a quote to mine and it is now hanging in my son's room. I love those little feet!

Bean Bags

I had some remnant fabric that I didn't want to go to waste and thought it would make cute bean bags.

The fabric that we used.

I folded rectangle pieces of fabric in half and sewed up a seam. Then I sewed the bottom closed to make a little pouch.

We used lentil beans to fill our bean bags because that is what we had in the house but you could use any dry bean or even rice to fill your bean bags.

Once your bean bag is full all you have to do is sew it closed and you have yourself a bean bag to play with. You can make them as big or as little as your like depending on the size of fabric you cut out.

Ours came out to be about 2" x 4" and are perfect for tossing around with a toddler.

Bean bags can be a great tool for practicing new skills with your little ones.

Some ideas for playing with your bean bags:

Throw a beanbag in the air, turn around, and catch it again.

Throw the beanbag up and backwards over your head and try to catch it behind your back.

Throw the beanbag in the air, clap your hands once, and catch it. Now try clapping your hands twice, then three times, and so on. How high can you go?

Throw the beanbag in the air and clap your hands under your right leg before catching it. Now try with your left leg. Now clap behind your back. Invent some more challenges.

Throw the beanbag up, jump, and try to catch it. Jump twice. Jump three times!

Throw it up, kneel down and try to catch it.

Throw and catch with just your right hand, then with just your left.

Try throwing it up and catching it with your eyes closed!

Balance the beanbag on your right foot, then throw it up and catch it from there. Can you do it with your left foot too?

Can you throw the beanbag up and catch it on your left foot?

Can you run with a beanbag balanced on your head? Can you jump? Can you twist around? Can you kneel down and stand up again, or sit down? Can you climb the stairs? Can you do any of these things with two beanbags balanced on your head? Or three?

Try balancing a beanbag on each shoulder while you walk, run, jump etc.

Sing one of your favourite songs or rhymes while you throw the beanbag up and catch it, or pass it round a circle of children.

Set up a variety of hoops, containers and targets and have some throwing practice.
How far can you throw the beanbag? Does it make a difference if you throw over-arm or underarm?

Cut up magazine collage

My sister is in the process of changing rooms and had a bunch of pictures cut from magazines and calendars that she wanted to hang on to. Instead of taping them back up on her new walls, we decided to make them into a one of a kind collage to hang.
First she cut around the pictures that we were going to use so that they would take up the least amount of space possible.

The only supplies you need are Mod Podge, a paint brush, a canvas and pictures you want to collage.

Once you have all your pictures cut out lay them out and figure out how you want to arrange them on your canvas. You then need to brush the Mod Podge down on the canvas where you will be placing you pictures.

Keep adding Mod Podge to the canvas to keep your pictures down on the canvas and keep them as smooth as possible.

Once all your pictures are down brush a nice smooth layer of the Mod Podge over the top of it all.
Allow it to completely dry and you will have a beautiful, shiny work of art. You can leave it as is or you can add embellishments to enhance it and add dimension such as buttons, flowers, ribbon, beads or anything your heart desires.

Edible Playdough

We ended our week of playdough fun by making an edible playdough and is was so much fun. This was the 1st time I cooked with Scarlett and she was such a great helper. She helped pour the ingredients in and stirred everything in the bowl, it was a really fun experience.

Oatmeal Playdough
2 cups smooth peanut butter
2 cups rolled oats
2 cups powdered milk
2/3 cup honey
Optional-Coconut, sprinkles, chocolate chips, red hots, nuts or whatever your heart desires
Mix ingredients until combined.
Roll into balls and store in air tight container.

We added coconut to our mixture and it was tasty. I have also tried one similar to this recipe that included raisins and sunflower seeds, they make a nice little protein pick me up in the afternoon.

That dirty happy face says it all. She loved playing with it, slicing it with her playdough toys, and loved taste testing it. I would call this one a hit and it gives us a nice little container of snacks for later.

Basic Playdough

We tried a recipe for basic playdough today and I am really happy with how it turned out. I don't think I will ever by buy pre made playdough ever again with how easy and inexpensive this recipe was.  I couldn't tell the difference between our home made one and our store bought one.

1 cup flour
1 cup of water
1/2 cup of salt
2 tablespoons cream of tarter
1 tablespoon of oil
Cook ingredients until it forms an item in the pan.
Pour it out onto counter and knead.
Add food coloring if you like.
Store new playdough in an air tight container.

You can't beat making things for your kids, knowing what goes into them and that there are no toxic ingredients incorporated. I feel safe letting my kids play with these playdoughs because if they were to put any in there mouths there is nothing harmful there.
