Salt Playdough

Today we made salt playdough and this too required very basic ingredients. All you need is flour, salt, water and food coloring. This one is a bit different because it is meant for creating shapes that you can dry out and then let it harden.

1 cup water
1 cup salt
1/2 cup flour
Food coloring
Mix ingredients in pan.
Add food coloring. Stir on low heat.
When it thickens remove from heat.
Put on waxed paper or floured surface and roll out.
Cut out objects.
Air dry objects for a few days.
Store un-used portion in air-tight container.

This is what ours looked like when it was all done. I tried to make it purple but it came out looking more like cement. It didn't take long to cook and although it was a bit sticky and messy it was very easy to clean up.

I rolled ours out on a plastic cutting mat and found that I needed a fair amount of flour on the mat and rolling pin to keep it from sticking. Once I did get it rolled out it was easy to cut and Scarlett and I really enjoyed playing with it.
We now have our shapes outside in the sun to dry; we will see how they turn out in a few days and report back. See you tomorrow as we make kool-aid playdough.
